Lip Fillers: Everything You Need to Know

At MPWR Aesthetics and Wellness, we believe in empowering our clients with knowledge. Lip fillers have become one of our most requested treatments, but there's still a lot of confusion about what they are, how they work, and what to expect. Let's dive into everything you need to know about lip fillers to help you make an informed decision.

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are injectable treatments designed to add volume, shape, and structure to the lips. Most modern lip fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in your body that helps maintain moisture and volume in your skin and joints. At MPWR Aesthetics, we have a variety of Restylane fillers that we can utilize to perfect your pout.

Unlike permanent fillers or implants from decades past, today's hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary (typically lasting 6-12 months), reversible, and much safer with natural-looking results .

Why Consider Lip Fillers?

People choose lip fillers for various reasons:

  • Adding volume to naturally thin lips: Creating fuller, more defined lips that remain in proportion with facial features

  • Restoring lost volume and hydration: As we age, our lips lose volume and definition

  • Improving symmetry: Balancing uneven lips

  • Enhancing shape: Defining the cupid's bow or lip border

  • Smoothing vertical lip lines: Reducing those fine lines that can cause lipstick to "bleed"

  • Subtle projection: Creating a gentle, natural-looking pout

The best lip filler results are the ones where people notice you look refreshed and beautiful, but can't quite pinpoint what's different.

The Consultation: Setting Expectations

At MPWR Aesthetics, we begin with a thorough consultation to understand your goals and assess your facial anatomy. This is the time to:

  • Discuss your desired outcome with your provider

  • Review before and after photos to align expectations

  • Determine the appropriate amount of filler.

  • Discuss potential risks and benefits

  • Create a treatment plan that may include other complementary treatments

Remember that achieving your ideal lips might require a staged approach, especially for first-timers. It's easier to add more filler later than to dissolve excess filler.

What to Expect During Treatment

Before Treatment:

  • Avoid blood thinners (aspirin, NSAIDs, fish oil, vitamin E) for one week before treatment (if medically cleared)

  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment

  • Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup

During Your Appointment:

  1. We'll take "before" photos and discuss your goals once more

  2. A topical numbing cream will be applied (most fillers also contain lidocaine)

  3. Strategic injections will be placed to create your desired look

  4. The entire process typically takes 30-45 minutes

  5. We provide PCA SKIN HA Lip Booster as post care to keep hydrated

Aftercare: Ensuring the Best Results

Proper aftercare is crucial for optimal results and minimizing side effects:

  • First 24-48 Hours:

    • Avoid touching or massaging your lips unless instructed

    • Stay hydrated

    • Sleep with your head elevated

    • Avoid strenuous exercise

  • First Week:

    • Avoid alcohol for 24-48 hours

    • Skip makeup on your lips for 24 hours

    • Avoid excessive heat (saunas, hot tubs)

    • No dental appointments for two weeks

    • Postpone any other facial treatments for 2 weeks

    • Avoid straws and sucking motions

Remember that your lips will initially appear more swollen than your final result. The swell in the first few days is NOT indicative of what they will look like, we promise! The "true" result becomes visible after about 2 weeks when all swelling has subsided.

Common Questions About Lip Fillers

How long do lip fillers last? Typically 6-12 months (some longer!), depending on the product used and your body's metabolism.

Will my lips look "done" or unnatural? Not when performed correctly! At MPWR Aesthetics, we pride ourselves on creating natural-looking enhancements that complement your features. The "overdone" lip look comes from excessive product or improper technique.

Is there any downtime? Minimal. You may experience some swelling and occasionally bruising for 2-7 days, but most patients return to normal activities immediately.

Do lip fillers hurt? Most patients report only mild discomfort thanks to numbing cream and the lidocaine in the filler itself.

Can fillers be removed if I don't like them? Yes! Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed.

Are there any side effects? Common side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, and redness. More serious complications are rare when treatment is performed by qualified providers.
